The Korea National Railway and KAIST are joining forces to foster AI specialists in the railway industry.

On October 14, the Korea National Railway announced that it will establish and operate a commissioned education program with KAIST to nurture AI professionals for the railway sector.

This program is being launched to proactively introduce new technologies such as AI, big data, and digital twins, which are rapidly spreading throughout the railway industry, and to train experts who can apply these technologies in the field.

The education will be provided through two tracks: the “Future City Specialized Master’s Degree Program” aimed at cultivating experts in smart city and future city infrastructure, and the “Digital Transformation (DX) Frontier Micro-degree Program,” a project-based practical course covering smart sensing, AI, and digital twins.

The DX Frontier Program will select 20 trainees and, over four months, cover the basics and practical applications of AI, as well as advanced technologies such as BIM (Building Information Modeling), cyber-physical systems, and mobility services.

The micro-degree is designed to correspond to 50% of the curriculum of a KAIST master’s program on a specific topic.

Participants will have the opportunity to develop practical AI capabilities by directly carrying out projects that address real-world railway challenges, such as designing monitoring systems for railway facilities and conducting AI-based facility condition analyses.

This program is linked to the Korea National Railway’s “Customized AI Education System for Each Career Stage.” By introducing this new program, the organization aims to strengthen AI competencies at all levels, from new hires to managers, enhance work efficiency through the application of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) in daily operations, and realize the construction of a smart railway network and advanced customer service.

Lee Seonghae, President of the Korea National Railway, stated, “Our collaboration with KAIST is a key driver of the AI-based smart railway innovation we are pursuing. We will ensure that the newly established education program becomes a hub for nurturing AI professionals who will lead the future of the railway industry.”
