Gwangju Buk-gu District Offers Temporary Medical Benefits to Flood-Affected Residents
Type 1 Medical Benefit Eligibility Retroactively Granted for Up to Six Months
Gwangju Buk-gu District will provide temporary support to reduce the medical expenses of residents affected by the heavy rainfall in July.
On October 12, Buk-gu District announced, "We will expand the application of medical benefits to disaster victims in the special disaster area to help ensure their practical livelihood stability." This measure has been introduced to help residents affected by the record-breaking downpour return to their daily lives as quickly as possible.
The support is available to residents who suffered damage with a disaster index of 300 or higher according to the National Disaster Management System (NDMS). This includes bereaved families of the deceased or missing, as well as households whose homes sustained severe damage. Buk-gu District will retroactively grant Type 1 medical benefit eligibility for up to six months to these individuals. The support covers essential medical services such as consultations, hospitalization, and surgery, as well as rehabilitation, assistive devices for people with disabilities, dentures, and implants. However, non-covered and selective benefit items are excluded.
The support period runs from July 16 to October 15, 2025. During this period, any out-of-pocket expenses paid at hospitals or pharmacies can be reimbursed retroactively. If a medical certificate indicating the need for long-term treatment is submitted, the benefit can be extended for an additional three months, up to January 15, 2026.
Buk-gu District plans to allocate a total of approximately 1.27 billion won to support about 500 residents. Applications can be submitted at the local administrative welfare centers in each neighborhood of residence from October 20 until the end of the year. The beneficiary, a relative, or a household member listed on the resident registration certificate must bring identification and the required documents to apply.
