Homebound Traffic Expected to Ease Around 8 to 9 p.m.
On the morning of October 5, the day before Chuseok, traffic congestion was reported on major expressways across the country in the direction of hometown visits. The congestion is expected to ease around 8 to 9 p.m.
According to Korea Expressway Corporation, as of 8 a.m. on this day, the estimated travel times by car from the Seoul tollgate to major cities nationwide are as follows: 7 hours and 30 minutes to Busan, 7 hours and 10 minutes to Ulsan, 6 hours and 30 minutes to Gwangju, 6 hours and 20 minutes to Daegu, 3 hours and 50 minutes to Gangneung, and 3 hours and 20 minutes to Daejeon.
The estimated travel times from each city back to Seoul are 5 hours and 40 minutes from Busan, 5 hours and 10 minutes from Ulsan, 3 hours and 40 minutes from Gwangju, 3 hours and 24 minutes from Daegu, 2 hours and 40 minutes from Gangneung, and 1 hour and 50 minutes from Daejeon.
On the Gyeongbu Expressway toward Busan, vehicles are moving slowly in several sections: 15 kilometers near Giheung-Dongtan to Namsa, 9 kilometers near Bukcheon-an to Cheonan, 12 kilometers from Cheonan Junction to Cheonan Hoduh Rest Area, 18 kilometers from Oksan Junction to Cheongju Junction, and 2 kilometers from Daejeon Tunnel to Biryeong Junction.
On the Seohaean Expressway toward Mokpo, traffic is moving slowly for 12 kilometers near Maesong Rest Area to Hwaseong Rest Area, 7 kilometers from Hwaseong Rest Area to Seopyeongtaek Junction, and 14 kilometers from Seopyeongtaek Junction to Seohae Bridge.
On the Jungbu Expressway toward Nami, vehicles are unable to pick up speed in several sections: 8 kilometers from Hobeop Junction to Namicheon IC, 3 kilometers near Jincheon Tunnel, and 13 kilometers from Ochang to Nami Junction.

The corporation forecasts that, in the direction of hometown visits, congestion will begin around 5 to 6 a.m., peak between noon and 1 p.m., and ease around 8 to 9 p.m. For those returning to Seoul, congestion is expected to start between 8 and 9 a.m., reach its peak between 11 a.m. and noon, and clear up around 8 to 9 p.m.
