Mayor Moon In Criticizes "Delayed Response by Gwangju City... Threat to Safety"
Gwangju Buk-gu has issued an emergency evacuation notice to residents living near the construction site of Subway Line 2.
According to Buk-gu on October 2, this measure applies to 13 buildings near Junghung Samgeori behind Gwangju Station. Since the start of construction, incidents such as wall collapses and exterior wall cracks have occurred in this area. In April, six residents were evacuated to temporary accommodations.
Gwangju City conducted an emergency detailed safety inspection from July 21 to September 18 to assess the condition of the buildings. The results showed that two buildings received a D grade (inadequate), and eleven buildings received an E grade (poor). A D grade indicates that major structural components have defects and require urgent repairs or reinforcement, while an E grade means the building must be immediately taken out of use and either reinforced or rebuilt.
After completing the inspection service on September 18, the city held a meeting with relevant agencies on the previous day to share the results. Starting that afternoon, Buk-gu began guiding residents to evacuate urgently. Temporary accommodations will be provided to evacuees, along with support to minimize inconvenience in daily life. Buk-gu plans to demand safety measures such as repairs and reinforcement and will continue monitoring the situation closely.
In a statement, District Mayor Moon In pointed out, "Although Gwangju City completed the detailed safety inspection on September 18, it was not until nearly two weeks later, on October 1, that a meeting was held and our district was notified. Failing to take even emergency actions such as evacuating residents during that period is a serious issue that threatens resident safety."

Mayor Moon further stated, "Efforts to protect the lives and safety of citizens must be pursued to an excessive degree if necessary. We will demand sufficient and bold measures from Gwangju City and the Urban Railroad Construction Headquarters so that residents can truly feel safe." He also recalled, "During the construction of Subway Line 1, we installed measuring devices and took immediate action. This time as well, Buk-gu will cooperate fully and spare no necessary support to ensure resident safety."
