Police Hold Special Promotion for ‘Arrest of Hacking Ringleader and Extradition of Philippine Fugitive’
The National Police Agency announced on the 30th that it held a special promotion appointment ceremony for those recognized for excellence in criminal apprehension and international cooperation.
In the field of criminal apprehension, Inspector Kim Youngsik of the Cyber Investigation Division 2 at the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency was promoted by one rank for his contributions in apprehending 18 individuals, including the ringleader of an international hacking organization. This group stole the personal information of prominent business figures and celebrities, illegally opened budget phone accounts under the names of numerous victims, infiltrated financial accounts and virtual asset exchange accounts, and defrauded approximately 39 billion won.
In the field of international cooperation, Inspector Lee Seongyu of the International Cooperation Office at the National Police Agency was honored with a special promotion. In June, Inspector Lee, together with the Philippine Naval Intelligence Agency and the Korean Desk, apprehended several major fugitives, including operators of online gambling sites.
