Last year, the number of single-person households in Gyeonggi Province reached 1.77 million, accounting for 31.7% of all households. Gyeonggi Province has had the highest number of single-person households nationwide for five consecutive years since 2020.
On September 24, Gyeonggi Province announced the release of the "2025 Statistics on Single-Person Households in Gyeonggi Province." This report reclassifies the status of single-person households across eight categories-such as population and households, housing, and income-based on six types of statistical data, including the Population and Housing Census from Statistics Korea, the Family Status Survey from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, and Gyeonggi Province’s own social surveys.
According to the statistics, the number of single-person households in the province was provisionally tallied at 1.77 million, an increase of 60,000 from the previous year (1.71 million). This figure represents 31.7% of all households in Gyeonggi Province (5.59 million households). Both the number and proportion of single-person households in Gyeonggi Province have been rising every year. Since 2020, the number of single-person households in Gyeonggi Province has surpassed that of Seoul, ranking first nationwide. Single-person households in Gyeonggi Province account for 22.1% of all single-person households in South Korea.
By city and county, Suwon had the highest proportion of single-person households at 10.4%, followed by Seongnam (7.6%), Goyang (7.3%), Hwaseong (7.0%), and Yongin (6.2%). A notable feature is that single-person households are concentrated in the top five most populous regions.
When looking at the proportion of single-person households relative to all households by city and county, Gapyeong had the highest at 39.4%, followed by Yeoncheon (38.9%) and Dongducheon (38.0%). In contrast, Gwacheon (17.4%), Uiwang (23.8%), and Namyangju (25.8%) had relatively lower proportions of single-person households.
As of last year, 26.0% of single-person households had an average monthly income of less than 1 million won, making this the largest group. This was followed by households earning 2 million to 3 million won (22.3%), 1 million to 2 million won (19.7%), 3 million to 4 million won (16.6%), over 5 million won (8.6%), and 4 million to 5 million won (7.0%). The proportion of those earning less than 2 million won was 45.7%, a decrease of 3.1 percentage points compared to 48.8% in 2023.
Regarding health status, 45.7% of single-person households responded that their health was "good," which is close to half of all respondents. Those who answered "poor" accounted for 20.1%.
In terms of housing size, 36.0% of single-person households last year lived in residences between 40 and 60 square meters, the largest group. This was followed by 20 to 40 square meters (25.5%) and 60 to 85 square meters (23.9%).
Yoon Youngmi, Director of the Gyeonggi Province Department of Women and Family, stated, "We have compiled statistics on single-person households in the province to comprehensively understand their distribution and status," adding, "These statistics will be used as foundational data when formulating future policies for single-person households in the province."
