View original imageOn September 23, ten days before the start of the Chuseok holiday, which can last up to ten days, a "sales competition" unfolded among the ministers of the relevant government departments at the Government Seoul Office. As a pre-event to the Cabinet meeting, the government held a "Chuseok Holiday Domestic Agricultural and Marine Food Products Consumption Promotion Event." About 30 Cabinet members, including Prime Minister Kim Minseok, attended the event. The Ministers of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and Oceans and Fisheries, who are in charge of the event, personally introduced the displayed products, which included fruits, livestock products, traditional liquor, rice, and hangwa (traditional Korean sweets), and offered tasting opportunities to the Cabinet members.
Minister Song of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs introduced fruit served in a transparent cup, saying, "We made cup fruit using low-carbon Shine Muscat grapes and Jeju Hallabong tangerines," and added, "Starting next year, we will provide fruit to elementary school children once a week." Upon hearing the term "low-carbon," Minister of Environment Kim Sunghwan also showed interest and sampled the products.
Not to be outdone, Minister Jeon of Oceans and Fisheries actively promoted processed marine products, saying, "We dried abalone and thinly sliced it to make jeolpyeon (sliced rice cake)." He continued, "I ask for the active cooperation of all Cabinet members so that our delicious and nutritious marine food products can be widely loved."
Prime Minister Kim said, "As we celebrate the Chuseok holiday, I ask the public to show greater interest in our agricultural and marine food products and to join in warm-hearted consumption. I also urge all government ministries and public institutions to take the lead in promoting the consumption of our agricultural and marine food products."
