The Climate Response Urban Forest Creation Project is an initiative to establish large-scale forests in and around urban areas to proactively address the climate crisis by promoting carbon absorption and mitigating urban heat islands and fine dust.
For this project, the city plans to allocate a total budget of 3 billion won for next year, including 1.5 billion won in national funding, to create an urban forest of approximately 3 hectares. This forest will connect the Suncheonman National Garden, the Dongcheon Estuary, and Suncheon Bay, serving as a climate crisis response measure within the city.
The planned urban forest will go beyond simple tree planting and be developed as a "carbon storage forest" that links the city with its wetlands. Through this, the project is expected to simultaneously achieve several goals: restoring biodiversity, forming a new ecological axis that connects estuaries, wetlands, tidal flats, and forests, and expanding carbon sinks to better address the climate crisis.
