Young Adults Caught in 'Institution Impersonation' Trap... Account for 52% of Voice Phishing Victims
More Young Victims Suffer Losses Over 100 Million Won
Sophisticated Scenarios and Isolation Tactics
This year, it has been confirmed that more than half of the victims of 'institution-impersonation' voice phishing scams are in their 20s and 30s.
According to the National Police Agency on September 18, the amount of damage caused by institution-impersonation voice phishing crimes from January to August this year reached 675.3 billion won, accounting for 76.2% of the total. By age group, those in their 20s and 30s accounted for the highest proportion of victims at 52%. In particular, as cases of fraud involving virtual assets have emerged, the proportion of young victims suffering losses of over 100 million won is increasing.
The main reason young people are vulnerable to institution-impersonation voice phishing is that criminal organizations use sophisticated scenarios and methods to thoroughly control and isolate their victims.
Investigative agencies never instruct individuals to enter personal information on specific websites or to access their own criminal records and investigation documents. It is also important to remember that they will never require communication solely through a specific messenger app or instruct you to activate a separate mobile phone.
