Jeonnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services Develops High-Quality Jujube-Shaped Cherry Tomato Variety
Improved Yield and Disease Resistance
Enhanced Cultivation Stability
Outstanding Consumer Preference
Full-Scale Distribution Planned for Next Year
The Jeonnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services has developed a new jujube-shaped cherry tomato variety that is expected to satisfy both consumers and producers.
The newly developed variety is a red jujube-shaped cherry tomato with an average fruit weight of 28.5 grams and a high sugar content of 9.2 Brix, offering excellent flavor. Additionally, the fruit is firm, resulting in a low incidence of skin splitting when ripe, and it is less prone to stem drop, making it highly desirable for producers due to these balanced characteristics.
The yield per unit area is also outstanding. Approximately 3.4 tons can be produced per 1,000 square meters (10 ares), which is expected to result in a higher harvest compared to standard varieties.
The new variety also demonstrates strong cultivation stability. It possesses combined resistance to major tomato diseases such as Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus, Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus, Fusarium wilt, and late blight, making it a producer-friendly variety.
In a preference evaluation conducted in July with a panel of 48 consumers, the variety received high scores for sweetness, juiciness, and texture, and its appearance was also rated superior to that of commercially distributed varieties.
