Gyeonggi Office of Education to Inspect Elementary School Commute Safety Until End of October
The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education will conduct safety inspections of routes to and from elementary schools. This is a follow-up measure in response to a recent incident in which a high school student attempted to abduct an elementary school student.
On September 15, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education announced that, under the leadership of its 25 education support offices, it will carry out intensive inspections of school commute environments at all elementary schools in the province until the end of October. For areas vulnerable to safety issues, such as zones near elementary schools that have not been designated as protection zones and high-crime areas, joint inspections will be conducted in cooperation with local police stations and municipal governments.
In addition, the office will promote the "Walking to and from School Together" campaign for elementary students using specially produced materials. This campaign will be publicized through the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education’s social media channels such as Facebook and Instagram, as well as through newsletters sent home by the education support offices and on the websites of educational institutions in the province.
The office also plans to designate child protection zones around all elementary schools in the province. Once designated, these zones will be monitored through the local government’s 24-hour integrated CCTV system, creating a safety network for school commute routes within 500 meters outside the school fences.
Previously, on September 10, the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education requested the Gyeonggi Nambu and Bukbu Provincial Police Agencies to strengthen patrols around schools during September and October. It is also working with the Gyeonggi Provincial Government and 31 cities and counties to expand support for dedicated child traffic guidance personnel.
