Six countries engaged in distant-water fisheries, including Ghana and Mozambique, gathered in Busan.
The Institute of International Cooperation for Fisheries Development at Pukyong National University, led by Director Park Wonkyu, announced on September 11 that it hosted the "2025 Korea-Pacific Island Cooperation Workshop" from September 1 to 5 at Park Hyatt Busan Hotel and other locations throughout Busan.
Supported by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' "Exchange and Human Resource Development Project for Distant-Water Fisheries Cooperation Countries," the workshop was attended by about 20 government officials, researchers, and industry professionals from key partner countries, including Ghana, Mozambique, Nauru, Palau, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.
Under the theme "Sustainable Fisheries Cooperation in the Era of Climate Change," the workshop featured special lectures on topics such as fisheries policy directions for climate change response, prevention of illegal fishing and resource management, and Korean seafarer training programs. These sessions provided participants with insights into Korea's experience and expertise in the fisheries sector.
In addition, experts from major institutions such as the Korea Maritime Institute, the National Institute of Fisheries Science, and the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fisheries Technology delivered lectures.
Participants also visited the Donghae Fisheries Management Service Operation Monitoring Center and the National Institute of Fisheries Science, where they observed Korea's policies and technological efforts for sustainable marine and fisheries development, focusing on the Climate Change Research Division and the Department of Fisheries Engineering.
