Worker Dies at Daewoo Construction Apartment Site on Geobukseom Island in Siheung

A fatal accident occurred at around 3:34 p.m. on September 9, 2025, at the construction site of the Prugio The Ocean apartment complex on Geobukseom Island, Jeongwang-dong, Siheung City, Gyeonggi Province, where a subcontracted worker in his 50s, identified as Mr. A, lost his life.

The accident happened while a large crane was being used to install a steel staircase on the rooftop, the 26th floor. One side of the staircase became detached for unknown reasons and struck Mr. A on the head, resulting in his death at the scene.

The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the accident, questioning witnesses including construction site personnel. They plan to hold those responsible accountable for occupational negligence resulting in death.

The Ministry of Employment and Labor has also issued a suspension of work order at the site and is investigating the cause of the accident. Additionally, they have begun an inquiry into possible violations of the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Serious Accidents Punishment Act.

A police official stated, "Steel staircases were suspended on both sides of the large crane, but for reasons yet unknown, one side fell and tilted, which appears to have caused the accident."

The accident site is part of an apartment complex consisting of four buildings with a total of 400 units, constructed by Daewoo Engineering & Construction. The complex, with two underground floors and up to 35 above-ground floors, is scheduled for completion in February next year.
