According to Honam University on September 8, the university, which has won the national 'AI Specialized University' service award for six consecutive years, is strengthening teaching and research capabilities by operating edtech workshops and hands-on programs centered around its Teaching and Learning Center.
The university has been leading various educational innovation initiatives by integrating generative AI into its unique WISE teaching methodology, including course design, development of evaluation criteria, creation of problem-based learning (PBL) scenarios, and enhancement of classroom interaction skills.
These efforts have resulted in tangible achievements, with instructors contributing to the improvement of students' AI literacy and problem-solving abilities. In recognition of these accomplishments, the university received the Action Learning Grand Prize (School Division) at the 2025 Korea Action Learning Conference.
In addition, the Teaching and Learning Center supports students by offering AI utilization training, design thinking, and creative problem-solving programs, which can be applied both within and outside the curriculum, thereby enhancing students' practical AI literacy and problem-solving skills.
Since last year, students, under the guidance of university professors, have been carrying out a project to reduce single-use items at Kia Champions Field by combining design thinking with generative AI. This achievement was recognized with the Young Scholar Award at the 23rd ICoME (International Conference for Media in Education), an international academic conference involving Korea, the United States, China, Japan, and other countries.
Furthermore, on August 25-26, Honam University held an 'Administrative Innovation Training Using Generative AI for University Staff,' targeting about 70 employees. The training explored ways to integrate the latest AI technologies into various university administrative tasks. Participants gained hands-on experience with the latest AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, developing the ability to dramatically improve administrative work.
The Teaching and Learning Center at Honam University plans to continue expanding customized AI competency enhancement programs for both faculty and students. In the second semester, the university will invite renowned domestic experts to offer special lectures for faculty on AI-based course design and will further strengthen faculty competencies for AI-integrated classes.
For student programs, the university also plans to provide practical education covering AI-powered learning management, important considerations when utilizing AI in learning, and ethical usage methods.
