Byeongyeong-myeon in Gangjin Steps Forward from Urban Regeneration to Local Branding and Local Mate Initiatives
Byeongyeong-myeon in Gangjin County, South Jeolla Province, has been selected for a series of projects including urban regeneration, local branding, and the Local Mate initiative, drawing attention as a model for phased regional revitalization.
According to Gangjin County on September 5, Byeongyeong-myeon, which had lost its vitality due to aging infrastructure and population decline, promoted community recovery and space revitalization with the participation of residents and young people as part of the urban regeneration project. The area was also selected for the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s Local Branding Activation Support Project for two consecutive years, allowing it to establish a master plan and basic design plan, as well as complete a co-prosperity platform promotional center. For three years, the region has also continued to host the “Bulgeumbulpa” event, which combines the local specialty dish of charcoal-grilled pork bulgogi with EDM performances.
This year, young entrepreneurs from Byeongyeong-myeon also participated in the Local Mate contest, jointly promoted by Shinhan Financial Group and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. The cultural planning company Portcom introduced a stay-type tourism product called “Yubaecation,” which incorporated the exile stories of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong and Hendrick Hamel, and offered gourmet tours, paddleboard experiences, and healing programs.
Baereok Co., Ltd. is fostering a traditional liquor brand using agricultural products from Gangjin and is preparing a program that combines alcohol culture and a film festival based on the Hamel Brewery.
