Suwon City Records Highest-Ever Employment Rate in First Half of the Year at 64.1%
The employment rate in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, reached an all-time high in the first half of this year.
According to Statistics Korea on September 3, the employment rate in Suwon for the first half of this year was 64.1%, a 2.6 percentage point increase compared to the same period last year. The unemployment rate was 3.1%, down 1.7 percentage points from the same period last year.
Suwon achieved its previous record-high employment rate of 62.9% in the second half of last year, but has now set a new record within just half a year. The employment rate has been steadily rising since the first half of 2023, when it was 60.5%.
Suwon's employment rate was 1.5 percentage points higher than the national average for cities, and 2.1 percentage points higher than the average for cities in Gyeonggi Province.
The employment rate increased across all demographic groups compared to the same period last year. The largest increase was seen among those aged 50 to 64, with a rise of 4.3 percentage points. The rate for women rose by 3.3 percentage points, for those aged 30 to 49 by 2.6 percentage points, for seniors aged 65 and over by 2.6 percentage points, and for youth aged 15 to 29 by 1.9 percentage points.
The number of regular employees was 467,000, an increase of 5,000 from the same period last year. The number of temporary and daily workers was 124,000, up by 24,000. The economically inactive population was 363,000, a decrease of 17,000.
Suwon has set a goal of creating 36,000 local jobs this year and is actively pursuing job creation initiatives.
The city is strengthening employment support policies for demographic groups with increasing labor force participation, such as middle-aged adults and women. It is also implementing employment stabilization policies in industrial sectors where the number of employees is declining, such as manufacturing.
In addition, Suwon is fostering industrial hubs through projects such as the development of the Tap-dong Innovation Valley and the promotion of the Suwon Free Economic Zone designation. The city is also building a financial and investment ecosystem by attracting companies and investment, expanding financial support, and supporting startups.

A Suwon City official stated, "We will continue to make efforts to create high-quality jobs in future industries," and added, "We will implement effective job policies to steadily increase the employment rate."
