Ministry of Justice Suspends Detention Center Employee over Alleged Assault of Asylum Seeker
The Ministry of Justice suspended an employee of the Cheongju Immigration Detention Center on August 29 following allegations that the staff member assaulted a Yemeni asylum seeker.
The Ministry of Justice stated in a press release on the same day, "We have immediately launched a fact-finding investigation into the incident, and any illegal acts by those involved will be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law and principles."
Previously, allegations had been raised that an employee at the Cheongju Immigration Detention Center repeatedly assaulted a Yemeni asylum seeker inside the living quarters.

The Ministry of Justice added, "We will do our utmost to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future through thorough investigations and institutional improvements, and we are committed to protecting the human rights of foreign nationals in detention."
