The theme of the forum was "Finding the Path to Future Education through Social Emotional Learning-Based Character Education." The event consisted of a screening of a character education video, a congratulatory address by Superintendent Lim Taehee, a keynote presentation by an expert, an empathy-based discussion, and a Q&A session.
Through the presentations by the panelists, participants explored a comprehensive understanding of social emotional learning-based character education, ways to apply it in the classroom, and character education elements that could be incorporated into the curriculum for the following year.
The provincial office of education recognizes that "character education" is a social consensus as the most essential education for students who will live in the future, and is implementing Gyeonggi Character Education, which emphasizes the importance of "cooperation" and "coexistence."
To this end, the office is actively promoting character education based on social emotional learning to help students develop key competencies such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, social cooperation, and responsible decision-making.
Superintendent Lim Taehee stated, "The goal of Gyeonggi education is to nurture future talents equipped with character and competence," adding, "Just as character education is naturally achieved through students' physical activities abroad, I believe that providing our students with a variety of experiences necessary for social life, such as sports activities and Gyeonggi Shared Schools, is also an important form of character education."
He continued, "If we gain a deep understanding of the concept of social emotional learning-based character education through today's forum, it will lead to educational changes based on practical data-driven analysis," and added, "I hope this will be an opportunity to seek a foundation for our society to move forward with cooperation rather than conflict, and togetherness rather than competition, through social emotional learning-based character education."
Meanwhile, the provincial office of education plans to develop and distribute "home-linked social emotional learning-based character education materials" so that character education can take place not only in classrooms but also at home and in the community, enabling real change.
