Will Woojin Jung, Chief Secretary to Minho Choi in Sejong City, Run for Local Office in Next Year’s Election?
Encouraged to Run by Political Circles,
Currently Considering Possible Constituencies
Woojin Jung, the chief secretary who previously served as the political secretary under the Minho Choi Sejong City administration, is drawing attention as speculation grows over whether he will run in the 9th nationwide simultaneous local elections scheduled for June next year. Jung is regarded in political circles as a leading figure in his 40s who pursues the values of rational conservatism.
According to Asia Economy's coverage on the 27th, it has been confirmed that Jung is considering running for a Sejong City Council seat in the new town district. A member of the People Power Party commented on Jung's potential candidacy, saying, "Jung, who possesses rational negotiation skills and an impressive background, would be a great asset to the party," and added, "He is expected to choose his constituency after the district mapping committee announces its results."
Before the 19th presidential election held in May 2017, Jung closely assisted candidate Junpyo Hong, who was then the presidential nominee for the Liberty Korea Party (now the People Power Party), in his campaign. During the 20th National Assembly, Jung played a key role as a legislative policy aide to lawmaker Jungro Kim.
In the 8th nationwide simultaneous local elections held in 2022, Minho Choi, then the People Power Party candidate, was elected and appointed Jung as political secretary, entrusting him with public civil affairs. Based on his experience in the presidential campaign and as a legislative policy aide in the National Assembly, Jung has served as Mayor Choi's right-hand man for over three years, earning recognition for his outstanding work abilities and being appointed as the third chief secretary under Mayor Choi's administration.
Notably, Jung was initially included in the list of candidates for the 22nd general election, effectively positioning him as a prospective candidate, but he abruptly reversed his decision. It was reported that he withdrew from the race to ensure the stable implementation of the administrative system for the success of Minho Choi's Sejong City administration. This was partly due to the local political reality, as the opposition holds a majority; out of 20 Sejong City Council members, 13 belong to the Democratic Party.

Jung avoided giving a direct answer regarding his candidacy in the local elections but did not deny the possibility. He stated, "It is true that I have been encouraged to run by party officials. I have not yet decided on a constituency, and for now, my priority is to support the mayor to the best of my ability until a final decision is made," adding, "Once my official role is concluded, I will clarify my position."
