It has been found that Michuhol-gu and Bupyeong-gu, areas in Incheon densely populated with single-family and multiplex houses, have the lowest parking space provision rates, making the expansion of public parking lots an urgent issue.
On August 25, Jongbae Kim, Incheon City Council Member, presented the results of a survey on the total parking space provision rates for public parking lots, apartment complexes, single-family houses, and multiplex houses in relation to the vehicle registration status of Incheon's 10 districts during a five-minute speech at the first plenary session of the 303rd temporary meeting of the Incheon City Council.
As of the end of December last year, the total number of registered vehicles in Incheon (excluding commercial and corporate vehicles) was 1,530,951. The number of parking spaces was 25,460 in public parking lots, 505,879 in apartment complexes, 31,623 in multiplex houses, and 75,578 in single-family houses. The ratio of parking spaces to the total number of vehicles stood at 58.09%.
By district, Dong-gu had a rate of 78.37%, Seo-gu 72.84%, Ongjin-gun 70.66%, Yeonsu-gu 66.96%, and Ganghwa-gun 65.56%, all above average. In contrast, Namdong-gu was at 54.02%, Michuhol-gu at 51.20%, Jung-gu at 49.84%, Bupyeong-gu at 43.35%, and Gyeyang-gu at 28.19%, all below average.
While parking demand in apartment complexes is largely met within the complexes, the parking shortage in areas with single-family and multiplex houses is extremely severe.
Seo-gu, which has the highest proportion of single-family and multiplex houses at 25.50%, also boasts the highest parking space provision rate at 72.84%. However, Michuhol-gu, with the third highest proportion of such houses at 14.08% among the 10 districts, has a below-average parking provision rate of 51.20%. Bupyeong-gu also has the fourth highest proportion of single-family and multiplex houses at 11.84%, but its parking provision rate is the lowest at 43.35%.
In the case of Gyeyang-gu, where the parking provision rate is the lowest at 28.19%, the proportion of single-family and multiplex houses is only 3.51%, indicating that parking shortages in older residential areas are not severe.

Kim stated, "We need to secure a budget for the construction of public parking lots in conjunction with Incheon's five-year mid-term local financial plan," and urged, "In particular, for the old downtown areas of Michuhol-gu and Bupyeong-gu, which are suffering from worsening parking shortages, please prioritize allocating funds to purchase vacant houses and expand public parking lots."
