Fierce Final Maneuvering in Opposition Leadership Race... Special Prosecutor's Raid and Alliance Remain Key Variables
Competition Intensifies for Party Support Ahead of Special Prosecutor's Raid
Kim Moonsoo Stages Sit-in at Headquarters, Ahn Cheolsoo Attends Emergency Meeting
All Eyes on Possible Alliance Between Ahn Cheolsoo and Cho Kyungtae
With only four days left until the People Power Party national convention, the final strategic maneuvering among the four main leadership contenders is intensifying. As the Kim Keonhee Special Prosecutor's team (led by Special Prosecutor Min Jungki) attempted to raid the People Power Party headquarters, Kim Moonsoo and Jang Donghyuk-both anti-impeachment candidates-are gaining momentum by rallying conservative support. Meanwhile, whether Ahn Cheolsoo and Cho Kyungtae, who are pro-impeachment candidates, will form a dramatic alliance remains the biggest variable in the race.

View original imageThe People Power Party will conduct a vote among its registered party members and a public opinion poll from August 20 to 21, and then hold the national convention at Osco in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, on August 22 to elect a new party leader. If no candidate secures a majority in the main election, the top two candidates will compete in a runoff on August 26. Since there is currently no candidate with an overwhelming lead, it is likely that Kim Moonsoo and Jang Donghyuk, who are leading in support, will compete for the party leadership.
The key variable is a last-minute alliance. Cho Kyungtae has been repeatedly proposing a unified 'innovation candidate,' but Ahn Cheolsoo continues to take a negative stance. A representative from Ahn Cheolsoo's camp stated in a phone call that day, "Although there is talk of a unified candidacy, neither Cho Kyungtae nor his allies have contacted us individually," adding, "We are not considering unification." However, if the anti-impeachment candidates continue to gain momentum, there is a possibility that an alliance could be formed around the final TV debate on August 19.
Another variable is the special prosecutor's investigation targeting the People Power Party. The special prosecutor is expected to attempt another raid on the party's headquarters as early as today to secure a list containing the personal information of approximately five million party members in connection with the 'Geonjin Monk·Unification Church lobbying allegations.' In response, the People Power Party will hold an emergency caucus in the afternoon at the Kim Keonhee special prosecutor's office in Jongno District and in front of the Seoul Central District Court in Seocho District, launching an all-out protest.
If the pressure from the special prosecutor intensifies, support for the anti-impeachment candidates is likely to consolidate. Kim Moonsoo has been staging an indefinite sit-in in the headquarters lobby for six consecutive days. Ahn Cheolsoo also plans to attend the emergency caucus in front of the special prosecutor's office that day to emphasize his commitment to the protest. A representative from Ahn's camp stated, "It is true that the special prosecutor's investigation is excessive," adding, "As a party leadership candidate, he must go where the lawmakers are (the emergency caucus)."

Song Eonseok, the interim leader and floor leader, stated at an emergency committee meeting held at the party's central headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, "We cannot cooperate in any way with this inhumane, opposition-suppressing raid that treats all People Power Party members as potential criminals," and emphasized, "Today, our party lawmakers will go to the unconstitutional special prosecutor Min Jungki's office to demand an end to the unjust, politically retaliatory raid aimed at seizing the party membership list."
