Daegu Police to Completely Block Street Racing Groups on Liberation Day
Deployment of CCTV and Unmarked Vehicles
All Ringleaders and Participants to Face Criminal Charges
The Daegu Police Agency and the Daegu Municipal Police Committee will launch a large-scale special crackdown on illegal street racing groups throughout the city on the night of August 14, the eve of Liberation Day.
This operation will involve more than 160 personnel, including traffic police, sidecar units, undercover patrol teams, traffic crime investigation teams, and mobile patrol units, along with 71 patrol cars.
In preparation for this crackdown, the police designated the 11-day period from August 4 to August 14 as a "preliminary intensive enforcement period," during which they strengthened inspections and crackdowns on major violations such as motorcycle signal violations, crossing the centerline, unlicensed driving, and obscured license plates.
On the day of the special crackdown, police will pre-deploy personnel to 15 major hotspots where street racing groups are known to gather, aiming to prevent the gatherings from taking place. Considering the tendency of these groups to frequently change meeting locations, a mobile deployment strategy will also be implemented. At the scene, unmarked vehicles with plainclothes officers will record illegal racing activities on video. The footage collected will be used to identify not only the ringleaders but also all participants, leading to post-event criminal charges.
The core of this operation is the use of surveillance CCTV, known as the "eyes on the street." The police will assign dedicated officers to the CCTV control center to monitor gathering spots and movement routes in real time, capturing footage of violations to secure as evidence. The collected materials will be actively used to identify those involved and support follow-up investigations.
Previously, Daegu police conducted similar special crackdowns on March 1 (Independence Movement Day) and Children's Day, arresting 76 individuals at the scene and, through video analysis, filing criminal charges for joint dangerous acts against a total of 33 people.
