Sangju City Wins Gold Prize at Gyeongbuk Mugunghwa Exhibition
"Samcheolli" Sets New Standard,
Solidifying Sangju's Status as the City of Mugunghwa
Sangju City in Gyeongbuk has further solidified its status as a "city of Mugunghwa." On August 8, the city claimed the top spot in Gyeongbuk by winning the gold prize at the "2025 Gyeongsangbuk-do Mugunghwa Outstanding Potted Plant Exhibition," held at the Gyeongbuk Forest Environment Research Institute.
At this competition, Sangju City submitted a total of ten potted plants, including its representative entry, "Samcheolli." The judging process combined a quantitative evaluation (15 points), which reflected the number of entries and level of interest, with a qualitative evaluation (85 points) that assessed artistry, management, aesthetics, and representativeness.
In particular, "Samcheolli" was highly praised by the panel of judges for its deep and vivid jadamsim color, robust yet stable form, and balanced blooming condition.
The arrangement of branches, maintenance of flower shape, proportion of leaves to flowers, and harmony with the pot were all perfectly coordinated, allowing it to surpass entries from other cities and counties. It also captivated visitors at the event.
This gold prize is more than just a competition achievement; it simultaneously demonstrates two accomplishments: proof of nationwide-level Mugunghwa cultivation and management expertise, and an enhancement of the "Mugunghwa City Sangju" brand value.
The city plans to accelerate follow-up projects, such as building a database for each Mugunghwa variety and expanding citizen participation programs for Mugunghwa cultivation.

Kim Gukrae, director of the Sangju City Forestry Division, stated, "Mugunghwa is a flower imbued with the identity and pride of our people," adding, "This award is the result of the interest and love of all Sangju citizens." He emphasized, "We will continue to establish ourselves as the leading Mugunghwa city representing the Republic of Korea."
