Google Launches AI Tutor "Guided Learning"
OpenAI Recently Launches Study Mode
Now Includes Diagrams and Video Features
On August 6 (local time), Google announced that it is launching a new tool called "Guided Learning" within its artificial intelligence (AI) model Gemini.
Guided Learning functions like an AI tutor and is designed not only to provide answers, but also to help users build a deeper understanding. Gemini analyzes problems step by step and offers explanations tailored to the user's level and needs. Rather than simply giving the correct answer, it helps users build knowledge and test themselves by utilizing images, diagrams, videos, and interactive quizzes.
Google explained that this feature will help users discover the "why" and "how" behind concepts.
Maureen Heymans, Vice President of Learning and Sustainability at Google, wrote in a blog post, "Whether you're preparing for an exam and studying enzymes, drafting a paper on the importance of bee populations in supporting food systems, or exploring your passion for photography, 'Guided Learning' will be a partner who thinks alongside you at every step to help you understand."
This tool has been released ahead of the new school year. It comes about a week after OpenAI introduced a similar feature called "Study Mode" on July 29. OpenAI previously explained, "When using AI in educational settings, an important question arises: 'Does it actually help with real learning, or does it simply provide answers?' We developed 'Study Mode' to address this question."
Google stated that it is improving Gemini overall to better support learning, and that in the future, Gemini will automatically include images, charts, and YouTube videos in its answers when explaining complex topics.
