Yeoju City to Host Special Lecture on Goethe's 'Faust' by Renowned German Literature Scholar Youngae Jeon

Yeoju City in Gyeonggi Province announced on August 6 that it will host a special lecture on Goethe's 'Faust' by world-renowned German literature scholar and Seoul National University Professor Emeritus Youngae Jeon. The event will take place at Sejong Gugakdang on October 16 at 7 p.m.

View original image'Faust' is a monumental work completed over 60 years by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the great author who elevated German literature to a global level. The story explores the contract between Faust, a man who has reached the pinnacle of knowledge, and the devil Mephistopheles, as well as the power of 'good' that encompasses even 'evil.' Professor Youngae Jeon, a leading authority on Goethe studies worldwide, is expected to deliver a lecture that will provide citizens with profound enjoyment and inspiration.
Professor Youngae Jeon is credited with ushering in a renaissance of German literature in the Korean academic world. She is renowned for her outstanding translations of classics such as Hermann Hesse's 'Demian' and Franz Kafka's 'The Metamorphosis.' Having devoted her life to Goethe studies, she became the first Asian woman to receive the Goethe Gold Medal in Weimar, Germany, in 2011. Currently, Professor Jeon is dedicated to running Yobaek Seowon and Goethe Village in Gangcheon-myeon, Yeoju City, Gyeonggi Province.
