"Korean University Students Progressive Union Members Detained After Surprise Protest in Front of U.S. Embassy Demanding Suspension of South Korea-U.S. Joint Military Exercises"
Three members of the Korean University Students Progressive Union were taken into custody by police after staging a surprise protest in front of the U.S. Embassy in Korea.
On August 5, Jongno Police Station in Seoul announced that the individuals were detained on suspicion of violating the Act on Assembly and Demonstration.
According to the police, the union held a surprise protest at around 1:00 p.m. that day in front of the U.S. Embassy in Jongno-gu, Seoul, demanding the suspension of the South Korea-U.S. joint military exercises and opposing the increase in defense cost-sharing.
The police stated that the individuals are suspected of violating Article 6 of the Act on Assembly and Demonstration, which requires organizers of outdoor rallies or demonstrations to submit a notification to the chief of the relevant police station at least 48 hours prior to the event.
