ASEAN Field Study Conducted
for Nurturing Global Talent
Korea University announced on August 6 that the third cohort of participants in the 'CMK ASEAN School,' which is jointly operated with the Hyundai Motor Chung Mong-Koo Foundation, has been conducting an in-depth field study in three ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand) from July 27 to August 7.
The CMK ASEAN School is a program organized by the ASEAN Center at the Asiatic Research Institute of Korea University. It aims to nurture the next generation of leaders who will spearhead Korea-ASEAN cooperation by advancing into the ASEAN region.
After completing two weeks of domestic lectures starting on July 14, the participating students visited various ASEAN countries to conduct field research, visit institutions, and carry out team projects.
For the third cohort, 15 university students from Korea were selected to join the program. They are enhancing their understanding of the politics, economy, society, and culture of each country while collaborating with local university students on joint research projects addressing social issues.
In particular, during the Indonesia portion of the program, the participants formed joint teams with students from Universitas Indonesia. Together, they held joint presentation sessions and engaged in in-depth discussions on a range of topics, including food security, youth unemployment, responses to climate change, rural development, and ASEAN policy directions.
During this field study, the students are expanding their practical perspectives by directly visiting major government agencies and international organizations in each country, such as Indonesia's Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS), the ASEAN Secretariat, the Republic of Korea Mission to ASEAN, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore, Chulalongkorn University and Bangkok City Hall in Thailand, and the United Nations ESCAP.
Shin Jae-Hyuk, Director of the Asiatic Research Institute at Korea University, stated, "Through this CMK ASEAN School, students are gaining a global learning experience that encompasses both theory and practice across domestic and international settings. The visits to local institutions and youth exchanges are especially meaningful in strengthening their understanding of the ASEAN region and their capacity for cooperation."
