On August 4, the city of Guri in Gyeonggi Province announced that "Guritopyeong Hangang" had been selected as the winning entry in the naming contest for the "Guritopyeong 2 Public Housing District," which was designated as a new housing site candidate by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in November 2023. View original imageThis contest was held for four weeks from June 2 to June 27, targeting residents of Guri. A total of 689 entries were submitted.
The evaluation criteria comprehensively considered appropriateness, usability, originality, and popularity. Through the first round of internal screening, 10 candidate names were selected. The final rankings were determined by the judging committee based on the highest scores.
As a result, "Guritopyeong Hangang" was awarded first place (Grand Prize), "Gurihangang Green" was awarded second place (Excellence Prize), and "Guri Smart Green" was awarded third place (Encouragement Prize).
"Guritopyeong Hangang," which was selected as the top entry, combines the regional name, the project's distinctiveness, and the image of the Han River. It was highly rated for its intuitive and symbolic qualities, making it easy for citizens to remember and use.
According to the city, the submitted names frequently included keywords such as "Guri," "Topyeong," "Smart," "Green," "Hangang," "River," "Jangja," "Eco," and "Valley."
This reflects the citizens' aspirations for the Guritopyeong 2 Public Housing District to become a self-sufficient eco-friendly city that embodies their pride, based on the district's Han River views and the ecological value of Jangja Lake Park.
The city plans to award certificates from the mayor to the citizens whose entries were selected. In addition, the city will recommend "Guritopyeong Hangang," the Grand Prize winner, to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as the official name and utilize it in various promotional materials.
Guri Mayor Baek Kyunghyun emphasized, "This contest was a meaningful process in which citizens directly considered and expressed the identity of our region. We will do our utmost to make the Guritopyeong 2 Public Housing District a city where anyone would want to live, with a balanced combination of residential, workplace, and leisure functions, reflecting the wishes of Guri citizens."

Meanwhile, the Guritopyeong 2 Public Housing District conducted a public review of the draft Strategic Environmental Impact Assessment and Climate Change Impact Assessment from June 30 to July 28. The city is moving forward with the goal of officially designating the district in the second half of this year.
