A Sports Day Where Participants Compete in Events Featuring Sensors, Robots, and Augmented Reality
A Sports Day Reimagined with Science and Technology
National Science Museum Hosts "Maker Sports Day" Contest for Event Design and Operation
Instead of traditional sports day events, a new type of sports day is being held where participants compete in events they have designed and executed themselves by integrating science and technology. Anyone can create an event, and any place can become a sports field. In this era, blueprints, sensors, robots, and augmented reality take center stage on the field, rather than sweat and muscle.
The National Science Museum announced on the 29th that it will host the "2025 Maker Sports Day Event Design, Production, and Operation Contest."

View original imageThis contest is an experiment aimed at completely rewriting the concept of the sports day as we know it. It goes beyond simply collecting event ideas; applicants will actually design, produce, and pilot their own games, and then complete the process by showcasing them as official events at the "Maker Sports Day" in October.
The events will cover ambiguous themes such as "mobility events" that use various means of transportation, "futuristic games" that blend technology with traditional play, and "digital sports" based on augmented reality or sensors. From the event rules to the scoring system, participants are free to design every aspect.
The question "Is this play? Is it science? Is it sports?" marks the beginning of this contest, and the core aim is to make it all of these things?play, science, and sports at once.
Event design proposals will be accepted from the 1st to the 10th of next month. Teams that pass the first round of screening will receive up to 1.5 million won in production support and expert mentoring.
Over approximately six weeks, participants will complete their events and then hold actual competitions at the "2025 Maker Sports Day" at the National Science Museum on October 25. At this time, the event creator will serve as the player in the demonstration game, the operator, and even the referee. The participants in these games will be evaluated in the final round, and awards will be given, including the Minister of Science and ICT Award (Grand Prize), the Director of the National Science Museum Award (Excellence Prize), and a prize worth 100,000 won.
Kwon Seokmin, Director of the National Science Museum, said, "Science and technology are ultimately tools to make life more enjoyable and diverse. The Maker Sports Day is a stage that demonstrates this potential, and it is an important first step in creating a new culture where play, technology, creativity, and collaboration come together." He added, "We hope for the enthusiastic participation of everyone interested in futuristic sports and games."
