Gurye County Introduces "Community Contribution Allowance" as Part of Basic Society Initiative
Gurye Love Gift Certificates Provided
to Outstanding Community Contributors
Gurye County in South Jeolla Province announced on July 22 that, as part of its core administrative direction to implement a "Basic Society," it will begin providing community contribution allowances to outstanding volunteers starting this year.
The "Basic Society" is Gurye County's policy philosophy aimed at strengthening the social foundation so that all residents can enjoy not only a minimum standard of living but also a life of freedom and dignity. In February of this year, the county held a policy development briefing and has since discussed various policies to address welfare blind spots and restore the community.
This community contribution allowance program is one of several initiatives to realize the Basic Society policy. It is designed both to formally recognize the contributions of volunteers dedicated to the community and to support small business owners by encouraging local spending.
Eligible recipients are residents who have completed at least 36 hours of volunteer work during 2024. The allowance will be provided in the form of Gurye Love Gift Certificates worth 120,000 won. Applications can be submitted in person at the Resident Welfare Division of Gurye County Office until August 29. The gift certificates can only be used at affiliated stores within the county, and are expected to provide a tangible boost to the local economy.
In addition to this community contribution allowance, the county is currently in discussions with the government to promote a range of Basic Society initiatives, including additional support for out-of-pocket infertility treatment costs, the removal of income restrictions for childcare services, and subsidies for bathing and hairdressing expenses for seniors.
Kim Soonho, the county governor, stated, "This is an important step in establishing a foundation to improve the quality of life for residents in rural areas facing the threat of depopulation," and added, "Gurye County will continue to prioritize ensuring that all residents enjoy a free and dignified life."
