People Power Party: "Kang Sunwoo Embodies Abuse of Power... Democratic Party's Excuses Are Outrageous"
"President Lee's Approval Rating Drops for the First Time... A Clear Sign of Public Discontent"
"Stop Challenging Common Sense and Immediately Withdraw the Appointment of Kang Sunwoo"
On July 22, the People Power Party strongly criticized President Lee Jaemyung's announcement of his intention to appoint Kang Sunwoo as Minister of Gender Equality and Family, stating, "The level of excuses and defense from the Democratic Party, which is lining up to shield Kang Sunwoo, is truly outrageous."
Kwak Gyutaek, chief spokesperson for the People Power Party, issued a statement that day, saying, "The fact that President Lee's approval rating has declined for the first time since taking office is a clear sign of public discontent." He urged, "The government and the ruling party must stop shielding their own members and challenging common sense. They should immediately withdraw the nomination of Kang Sunwoo, even at this point."
Chief spokesperson Kwak criticized the Democratic Party for defending Kang Sunwoo against accusations of abuse of power toward her aides, describing it as "an attempt to make someone who is the very embodiment of abuse appear normal." He then asked, "Are the angry voices of the aides simply echoes in the void?"
He further stated, "The fact that the party leadership considers making aides take out household trash and repair toilets a 'subjective issue' is appalling," and added, "Equating a perpetrator of abuse with someone suffering from alcoholism is itself an abnormal way of thinking."
The previous day, Moon Jinseok, deputy floor leader of the Democratic Party, emphasized on KBS Radio's 'Jeongyeok Sisa' program that "the decision of the appointing authority must be respected." He then compared President Lee's decision to appoint Kang Sunwoo to "the decisive action of Zhuge Liang, who won wars by making painful sacrifices, and the decision of President Lincoln, who entrusted General Grant, an alcoholic, with full authority based on trust, leading to victory in the American Civil War."
On the same day, Kim Hyunjung, floor spokesperson for the Democratic Party, also defended Kang Sunwoo on YTN Radio's 'News Fighting,' saying, "The issue of abuse of power is relative and subjective."
Chief spokesperson Kwak pointed out, "Even aides within the Democratic Party are now despairing, saying, 'We can no longer speak of pride and a sense of duty to our juniors.'" He added, "The Democratic Party, which once created the Euljiro Committee to champion the rights of the underprivileged, is now showing double standards by shielding the perpetrator of abuse to the very end."
