Busan International Film Festival Employee Sentenced to Prison and Taken Into Custody in First Trial for Illegal Filming Charges
Ordered to Complete 40 Hours of Sexual Violence Treatment Program
An employee of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) was sentenced to a prison term and taken into custody in court for illegally filming a female colleague's body.
On July 18, the Busan District Court Criminal Division 10 (Presiding Judge Heo Seongmin) announced that it had sentenced a man in his 40s, identified as A, to one year in prison and ordered his immediate detention in court on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes (filming using cameras, etc.).
The court also ordered A to complete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program.
A was accused of illegally filming a woman in her 30s, identified as B, with whom he worked as a short-term contract employee from April to July 2023, on multiple occasions, including secretly recording their sexual intercourse with a mobile phone placed on a bedside table. B became aware of the crime belatedly and reported A to the police and the Korean Film Gender Equality Center 'Deundeun' in May 2024.
It was confirmed that the illegal footage was not distributed online or elsewhere.

The court ruled that the defendant's actions caused significant harm by damaging the victim's dignity, reputation, and overall life. The court added, "The victim is seeking severe punishment for the defendant," and noted, "Although the defendant deposited a substantial amount of money for the victim, the victim has consistently expressed to the court that she has no intention whatsoever of accepting it."
