With global inflation and economic uncertainty continuing, "value-for-money travel"-enjoying diverse experiences on a limited budget-has emerged as a new trend. Agoda, a travel platform, selected Daejeon, South Korea, as one of the top destinations in Asia for budget-friendly travel during the summer vacation season from June to August this year.
Daejeon, South Korea, ranked 9th on Agoda's list of value-for-money travel destinations in Asia. The ranking was based on Agoda's analysis of average accommodation prices on its platform across nine major Asian markets. Daejeon recorded an average nightly rate of 126,294 won, placing it 9th overall. The top spot went to Surabaya, Indonesia, followed by Tirupati in India, Hat Yai in Thailand, Da Lat in Vietnam, Iloilo in the Philippines, Kuching in Malaysia, Nagoya in Japan, Kaohsiung in Taiwan, and Daejeon.
Daejeon is increasingly being recognized as a "fun city"-especially among Millennials & Gen Z-drawing attention as a young and dynamic travel destination. Thanks to its excellent accessibility from Seoul and convenient transportation infrastructure, it is popular among travelers who prioritize value for money.
In particular, Seongsimdang, Daejeon's iconic bakery, is considered a must-visit for a value-for-money "bread pilgrimage," offering a wide variety of baked goods at reasonable prices.
On June 24, Japan's STV (Hokkaido Broadcasting) introduced Daejeon as a "hidden gem in Korea to enjoy with family" on its program "Dosanko Wide." A Japanese reporter who visited Seongsimdang explained that "some people even take the KTX from Seoul just to eat this fried Gombo bread. Its popularity is so high that 40,000 pieces are sold per day." Tasting the bread, the reporter remarked, "The outside is as crispy as a cookie, while the inside is moist and soft. I've never experienced this kind of texture before-not even in Japan," expressing amazement.
Daejeon is also home to the professional baseball team Hanwha Eagles, making it a hotspot for travelers who want to enjoy both sightseeing and sports. With the Hanwha Eagles consistently ranking near the top of the league this year, Daejeon City and its districts are actively engaging in "sports marketing."
Recently, Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Seungyeon drew attention among baseball fans by attending a Hanwha Eagles game on July 3 to keep a promise he made to employees during his recent on-site visits.
Among domestic cities, Daegu and Jeju were also selected as popular value-for-money destinations in South Korea, with average nightly rates of 131,726 won and 143,948 won, respectively.
