Former Pukyong University President Gang Namju Passes Away at 86
Gang Namju, former president of National Pukyong University, passed away on June 25. He was 86 years old.
He served as the second president of Pukyong University for four years starting in 2000. During his tenure, he expanded educational and research infrastructure by reorganizing the curriculum, establishing the Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, and building new library and dormitory facilities. He also contributed to establishing a cooperation network among port cities in Korea, China, and Japan, and played a key role in positioning Pukyong University as a regionally focused national university after its integration.
He was also highly active in the literary world. As a poet, novelist, and critic, he continued his creative work and, as a senior figure in the local culture and arts community, worked to preserve cultural spirit and lay its foundations. He is recognized for playing a central role in the process of registering the records of the Joseon Tongsinsa as UNESCO Memory of the World heritage.
Born in 1939 in Hadong, South Gyeongsang Province, he graduated from Busan Fisheries College, the predecessor of Pukyong University, and earned his doctorate in Korean Language and Literature from Pusan National University. After working as a reporter for Busan MBC and JoongAng Ilbo, he became a professor in the Department of Korean Language and Literature at National Pukyong University in 1978, dedicating himself to education and research.
He served as executive director of the Joseon Tongsinsa Cultural Project Association, academic chair of the Korea-Japan joint registration for UNESCO Memory of the World, honorary professor at Renmin University of China, chairman of the Lee Juhong Literary Foundation, and CEO of the Busan Cultural Foundation, among other roles.

He is survived by his wife, An Jinggang, and children, Yuna, Jun, and Yugyeong. The funeral is being held in the special room at Haeundae Paik Hospital Funeral Hall in Busan, and visitors may pay their respects starting the afternoon of June 26. The funeral procession will take place at 8:30 a.m. on June 28.
