Seoul Facilities Corporation and Korean Society of Bridge and Structural Engineers Publish Book on Enhancing Bridge Durability
Enhancing the Safety of Aging Bridges Through Public-Private-Academic Collaboration
Seoul Facilities Corporation, in collaboration with the Korean Society of Bridge and Structural Engineers, has jointly published a book titled "Strategies for Enhancing the Durability of Post-Tensioning PSC Bridges."
This publication serves as a practical, field-oriented technical resource designed to help maintain and manage aging bridges safely for longer periods. It systematically organizes essential information for bridge management, covering everything from structural materials to design, construction, inspection, corrosion prevention, and repair and reinforcement. In particular, it emphasizes practicality and applicability in the field, making it immediately useful for real-world situations.
The publication of this book is a collaborative achievement of the "Road Infrastructure Alliance," which is actively led by Seoul Facilities Corporation. This alliance includes 19 organizations, such as Seoul Facilities Corporation, Korea Expressway Corporation, Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Corporation, Gyeonggi Province, and Seoul National University. These organizations are working together on technology development, policy improvements, and field application to enhance the safety of aging road infrastructure.
Since major defects were discovered in the PSC bridges of the Naebu Expressway in 2016, the corporation has consistently focused on research and technology development to improve bridge durability. This book was also completed through an "open innovation" approach, involving collaboration among private sector, academia, and public institutions since 2019.
Experts from the Korean Society of Bridge and Structural Engineers participated in writing the book, and its content was further strengthened in terms of expertise and effectiveness through cooperation with practical maintenance departments such as the Asset Management Innovation Division and the Road Facilities Division of the corporation. Seoul Facilities Corporation plans to distribute this publication to relevant local governments and academic societies responsible for bridge management.
Park Youngyeong, President of Seoul Facilities Corporation, stated, "This book is a result of public-private cooperation aimed at improving the effectiveness of bridge maintenance and is part of our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of citizens." He added, "Seoul Facilities Corporation will continue to expand collaboration with various organizations to enhance the safety and durability of road infrastructure and apply systematic management technologies in the field."
