Uiryeong County Selected for Regional Specialized Crop Cluster Development Project
38 Billion KRW Invested to Establish Chodang Corn Production Base
Uiryeong County in South Gyeongsang Province announced on June 9 that it has been selected for the second consecutive year as the final recipient of the 2025 Regional Specialized Crop Cluster Development Project, organized by South Gyeongsang Province.
The Regional Specialized Crop Cluster Development Project is an initiative led by local farmers to establish specialized crop clusters tailored to local conditions. The project aims to promote the transition to competitive specialized crops, expand their scale, and ultimately increase farm income. The county prepared for this project to foster agricultural development in the eastern region, in addition to the existing focus on the northwestern region, thereby achieving balanced agricultural growth in the area.

The project will invest approximately 1.41 billion KRW in disaster-resistant greenhouses and the development of agricultural water resources. Last year, the project combined 2.44 billion KRW for disaster-resistant greenhouses and the renovation of distribution facilities, bringing the total investment in the area to 3.8 billion KRW.
Through this project, the county will build 160 greenhouses for Chodang corn production in 45 farms across three townships?Nakseo-myeon, Burim-myeon, and Jijeong-myeon. The project will also include the renovation of collection facilities and the development of groundwater resources.
Chodang corn, which is being promoted as a regional specialty in Uiryeong County, can be eaten raw without boiling and has a high sugar content of over 17 Brix, making it an ideal snack. Chodang corn grown in greenhouses in Uiryeong County accounts for 80% of the national supply during May and June.
An official from the Agricultural Technology Center stated, "By upgrading old greenhouses to disaster-resistant facilities, we can now stably produce high-quality Chodang corn in an environment optimized for both natural disasters and crop cultivation. We expect the brand value of Uiryeong County's premium Chodang corn to rise even further."
