Muju County Selected for "One City/County-One Specialized Resident Population Project" Contest
Discovery and Support of Resident Population Expansion Programs
Muju County has been selected as the final winner in the "One City/County-One Specialized Resident Population Project" contest organized by North Jeolla Special Self-Governing Province.
According to the county on May 29, this contest was launched to discover and support programs aimed at increasing the resident population by utilizing the unique characteristics and resources of areas within the province experiencing population decline.
The county received positive reviews for presenting a sustainable stay-type tourism model through the "Betterri in Nature Special City Muju" project. "Betterri in Nature Special City Muju" is centered on Muju's distinctive ecological and traditional resources, as well as its unique cultural content.
In particular, the county plans to operate a "Backpacking Festival" based on differentiated trekking courses in each of its six towns and townships, and an "Outdoor Festival" that connects local cultural content such as Nakhwa-nori (traditional firework play) and Taekwondo. These initiatives are expected to revitalize stay-type tourism and attract an inflow of resident population.
Hwang Inhong, the county governor, stated, "The significance of being selected in this contest lies in presenting a sustainable stay-type tourism model based on Muju's nature and culture. Although we are facing the risk of local extinction due to aging and population decline, we will continue to develop practical alternatives to expand the resident population in every possible way unique to Muju."
Meanwhile, this project will be implemented from January to December next year with a total budget of 100 million won (50 million won from the province and 50 million won from the county). The county plans to reflect this in its main budget and proceed with the project accordingly.
