These are practical, daily-life-oriented projects designed to provide tangible support and add enjoyment to the everyday lives of single-person households.
According to the city on May 29, Gwangju will officially launch the customized policy "Solo Together: Valuable Life in Gwangju Even Alone" starting in June, reflecting age and gender characteristics to proactively address the issues of social isolation and care gaps among single-person households.
The "Solo Together" policy is a specialized project for single-person households jointly promoted by the city and its five districts. With a budget of 140 million won, six projects will be implemented.
Previously, the city received applications for the "Solo Together" project from the five districts and family centers, and selected the final six projects after evaluating the excellence, effectiveness, and appropriateness of project implementation capabilities.
The selected projects aim to address blind spots in the life cycle of single-person households and strengthen the safety net. They are composed of various programs tailored to the population characteristics of each district.
For young single-person households, projects focus on building social networks, including: "Wise Solo Life" (financial and economic education), "Miracle" (indoor sports), "Matnam Square" (cooking together), and "Value Activities in Six Areas" (cooking, home decorating, counseling, hobbies, sharing, and self-growth).
For middle-aged single-person households, the focus is on balanced meals and resolving daily inconveniences, with projects such as: "Nutritious Balanced Meals" (side dish cooking), "Art Journey, Steps of Happiness" (cultural experiences), "Gardening My Heart," and "'Tok-Tok~Talk' (from financial management and investment to home repairs and organizing).
For elderly single-person households, the focus is on health management and alleviating loneliness, with programs such as: "Onara" (a healthy lifestyle just for oneself), "Sseudam Sseudam Horticulture Class" and "The Glory Humanities School," and "Together with Companion Animals."
According to data from the Honam Regional Statistics Office, the proportion of single-person households in Gwangju is 36.5%, exceeding the national average of 35.5%, and continues to rise. In response, the city plans to develop customized policies for each life stage to address various social issues such as isolation, limited crisis response, and household burdens experienced by people living alone, ultimately aiming to increase the happiness index by ensuring a stable life for single-person households.
Lee Youngdong, Director of the Gender and Family Bureau, stated, "As lifestyle patterns change, single-person households are becoming central to daily life. In Gwangju, we will continue to develop citizen-centered policies that reflect generational characteristics so that even those living alone are not lonely and can enjoy a valuable life."
