Large-Scale Stone-Chamber Tombs: Sejong Hansoldong Burial Mounds to Become a National Historic Site
"Evidence of a Major Local Power in the Sejong Region"
The Sejong Hansoldong Burial Mounds, recognized as a historical monument of ancient Korean history, are expected to be designated as a National Heritage Site.
The National Heritage Administration announced on May 29 that it will collect opinions from various sectors for one month and then decide on the designation after a review by the Cultural Heritage Committee.
The Sejong Hansoldong Burial Mounds are residential sites and numerous ancient tombs from the Baekje period, unearthed in 2007 during the development of the Multifunctional Administrative City. Since 2022, they have been managed as a municipal monument.
Forty-eight tombs were constructed around the time of Baekje's capital relocation to Ungjin (475). Of these, only seven stone-chamber tombs and seven stone-cist tombs have been restored. The stone-chamber tombs are horizontal stone chamber graves with a side passage built of stone leading into the burial chamber, while the stone-cist tombs are stone coffin graves with walls made of stone but no passage.
Academics are particularly interested in the tomb known as Burial Mound No. 2. This tomb is larger than other stone-chamber tombs built during the same period and features a long, sloped passage with entrance stones. Entrance stones refer to stones placed at regular intervals in the temporary passage created for the placement of the deceased in a stone-chamber tomb.

An official from the National Heritage Administration explained, "The fact that both the passage and the burial chamber are constructed underground is a feature rarely seen in existing stone-chamber tombs," adding, "This suggests the presence of a local power base in this area." The official also stated, "This will provide an opportunity to newly recognize the historical background and value of Sejong City."
