Gwangju Office of Education to Operate Memorial Space Honoring Jeju Teacher
Ieum Plaza on the First Floor of the Main Office from May 27 to 30
Cyber Memorial Hall and Counseling Support Also Available
The Gwangju Office of Education will set up a memorial space at its main office to honor the memory of a Jeju middle school teacher who passed away after enduring persistent civil complaints.
On May 26, the Gwangju Office of Education announced that it would operate a memorial space on the first floor of the main office, at the Ieum Plaza, from May 27 to 30, where citizens, faculty, and students can all pay their respects. On the morning of May 27, the opening day, a memorial ceremony will be held with Superintendent Lee Jeongseon and staff in attendance.
Alongside the physical memorial, a cyber memorial hall will be established on the office’s website to commemorate teachers who have died in the line of duty, including the Jeju teacher. This online space will allow visitors to write memorial messages, request psychological and legal counseling, and access a resource center for teachers, among other support services.
Superintendent Lee Jeongseon stated, "We will do our utmost to create an environment where teachers are respected and can educate safely, so that such tragedies are not repeated."
Previously, on May 22, a teacher identified as A was found dead in a storage room at a middle school in Jeju. It is reported that A had been suffering from severe stress due to ongoing civil complaints from a student's family.
