Mokpo Coast Guard Launches Intensive Crackdown on Maritime Border Crimes
Proactive Measures Against Stowaway and Illegal Entry
The Mokpo Coast Guard Station (Chief Chae Sujun) announced on May 26 that it has declared a "Special Crackdown Period on Maritime Border Crimes" for 16 weeks until August 31, as a proactive measure against border crimes via maritime routes.
This intensive crackdown has been implemented as a proactive response to the arrival of a period vulnerable to maritime border crimes, such as improved weather during the vacation season, as well as a recent increase in attempts by domestic individuals, including the so-called "Coin King," to stow away using maritime routes, and the active sharing of methods on social media.
The main measures include: ▲ inspection and search operations both at sea and on land ▲ strengthened coastal patrols at vulnerable ports and harbors ▲ establishment of an organic cooperation system with related agencies (including the military) ▲ and the creation of a public reporting network through nationwide publicity efforts.
In particular, patrol vessels, police substations, and situation rooms will thoroughly share information and routes related to stowaway and illegal entry, maintain a 24-hour emergency response posture for intensive safety management and preparedness against border crime situations, and reinforce maritime security to respond swiftly to any incidents.
A Mokpo Coast Guard official urged, "If you discover individuals involved in stowaway or illegal entry, or spot suspicious vessels, please report them to the nearest Coast Guard station," and added, "We will do our utmost to prevent border crimes such as stowaway, illegal entry, and entry without a visa."
