MFDS Refers Unregistered Company for Unsanitary Kimchi-jjigae Production to Prosecution
Sold 16 Tons Worth 120 Million Won to Seven General Restaurants
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) announced on May 26 that it has referred the CEO of Company A to the prosecution on charges of violating the Food Sanitation Act. The CEO was accused of manufacturing and selling instant Kimchi-jjigae products in an unsanitary manner without registering a food manufacturing and processing business.
The MFDS launched an investigation after receiving information that Kimchi-jjigae products distributed to restaurants were being produced in an unregistered facility. The investigation revealed that from March to December of last year, the CEO of Company A manufactured instant Kimchi-jjigae products in a facility that was not registered for food manufacturing and processing. He then sold approximately 16 tons, worth about 120 million won, to seven general restaurants.
The CEO of Company A, who had been operating a food manufacturing and processing business in the Chungnam region, reportedly began producing products at a closed food manufacturing facility in Gyeonggi Province after it became difficult to continue production at his original site due to business deterioration, power outages, and aging facilities.
During this process, the CEO of Company A manufactured Kimchi-jjigae products in unsanitary conditions, using cooking facilities, equipment, and containers that had not been cleaned or disinfected, in a facility where the floors and inner walls were contaminated with water stains and mold.
