This selection will accelerate the training of talent for the energy industry in order to proactively respond to demand for areas such as offshore wind power.
Centered on Jeonnam and Jeonbuk, a consortium of eight universities (Mokpo National University, Suncheon National University, Korea Energy Engineering University, Dongshin University, Jeonbuk National University, Jeonju University, Chonnam National University, and Chosun University) and two regional innovation institutions (Green Energy Research Institute and Jeonbuk Technopark) will receive approximately 18 billion KRW in funding over the next six years, including 14.5 billion KRW from the national government and 3.48 billion KRW from local governments.
The selected project consists of three main areas: power grid systems, energy storage systems (ESS), and hydrogen energy. The goal is to nurture regional specialists in smart and flexible power grid operation and related technology fields.
Jeonnam Province plans to overcome the decline in local talent and limitations in training specialists by establishing a collaborative system among local governments, universities, companies, and innovation institutions. The province will also strengthen employment support to help specialists settle in the Honam region.
The main initiatives include: ▲ joint development and sharing of energy-related curricula ▲ solving technical challenges faced by local energy companies ▲ supporting startups and creating jobs ▲ and industry-academia collaboration projects. By sharing human and material resources and specialized technologies among participating universities, the project is expected to enhance educational expertise and contribute to establishing a system for nurturing core talent.
Kang Sanggu, Director of the Energy Industry Bureau of Jeonnam Province, stated, "With the selection of this project, we have established a foundation for nurturing talent that will lead the future of the energy industry in the Honam region," adding, "We will create a virtuous cycle in which the rapidly increasing workforce for offshore wind power and other sectors can settle in the region through quality job opportunities."
