Daeryun Law Firm: "SKT Damages Expected for 1,000 Victims... 1 Million KRW Per Person"
Press Conference Held on SKT Data Leak Accusation
Kim Kukil: "The Largest Incident in History"
"Number of Applicants Continues to Increase"
Daeryun Law Firm, which is currently pursuing criminal charges and a damages lawsuit in connection with the SK Telecom hacking incident, announced on the 22nd that the total amount of compensation is expected to reach 1 billion KRW.
Kim Kukil, the head of Daeryun, held a press conference titled "SKT Personal Information Leak Accusation" at the Seoul headquarters in Yeouido on this day. He stated, "We plan to file a damages lawsuit involving about 1,000 people either this week or, at the latest, by early next week," and added, "The amount claimed per person has been set at 1 million KRW." This means that the total amount of damages claimed by victims of SKT's USIM information leak will reach at least 1 billion KRW.
Kim emphasized, "This case is the largest USIM information leak incident in history," and explained, "There are indications that the hacking exposure lasted for a long period, and victims have suffered real inconveniences such as having to replace their USIM cards."
He continued, "While SKT has neglected security, it has continued to maintain high operating profits, and even now, it has not sufficiently disclosed the scale or details of the damage." He added, "Taking all of these factors into account, the firm has determined that claiming 1 million KRW per person in compensation is justified."
He also reported, "We are receiving real-time applications from victims for contract agreements and deposit of retainers, and the number of applicants continues to increase."
Previously, on the 1st of this month, Daeryun filed a complaint against SKT CEO Yoo Youngsang and the company’s security officers on charges including breach of duty and obstruction of official duties by fraudulent means. On the 16th, they submitted an additional opinion statement. The day before, they attended an investigation as complainants at Namdaemun Police Station.
