Approximately 400 people attended the ceremony, including Kwangwan Ko, Deputy Mayor of Gwangju, as well as representatives from food-related organizations, food hygiene businesses, consumer food hygiene monitors, meal service management centers, and relevant public officials who have contributed to food safety.
During the ceremony, 46 individuals were recognized for their contributions to food safety. In addition, a group performance was held under the slogan "2025 Visit Gwangju Year, Food Safety Together," reaffirming their commitment to spreading a culture of safe food.
Notably, the city was selected as an excellent institution for the third consecutive year in the "2025 Food Safety Management Evaluation" conducted by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. The evaluation comprehensively assessed 11 indicators, including the number of food hygiene monitors per establishment, the utilization rate of field reporting equipment (tablet PCs), performance in recalling hazardous foods, activity index of consumer food hygiene monitors, guidance and inspection rates and detection rates for businesses, the rate of handling civil complaints within the deadline, and the achievement and input rates for collection targets.
Alongside the event, job training was provided for consumer food hygiene monitors, sharing effective monitoring practices and strategies to enhance food safety awareness. In celebration of "Food Safety Week" (from the 7th to the 21st), the city is organizing a variety of side events, such as a photo exhibition of healthy and safe meal services and a food safety promotional campaign, to raise the profile of "Gwangju, the City of Taste" and to create a food environment that citizens can truly experience and appreciate.
Jung Younghwa, Director of the Welfare and Health Bureau, stated, "Receiving the award for excellence in food safety management is the result of thoroughly implementing safety management throughout the entire process from food production to consumption," and added, "We will establish a hygienic food environment in Gwangju where visitors can enjoy food with confidence."
