Sergeant Yoon Sangheon of the 1st Riot Police Unit under the Gwangju Police Agency apprehended a car thief while off duty. This incident demonstrated a police officer’s intuition and swift response in a situation close to everyday life for citizens.
According to the Gwangju Police Agency on May 14, Sergeant Yoon discovered a man behaving suspiciously in the underground parking lot of an apartment complex in Dong-gu, Gwangju, around 5:00 p.m. on May 5. While out with his family, Sergeant Yoon sensed the possibility of a car theft crime from the man loitering around vehicles. He reported the situation to 112 and detained the suspect at the scene before handing him over to the responding officers.

View original imageAccording to the police, the suspect is accused of targeting vehicles whose doors were unlocked and whose side mirrors were not folded, and stealing valuables from them. It appears he determined whether the doors were locked by checking the exterior condition of the vehicles before committing the thefts.
Lee Dongmyung, head of the 1st Riot Police Unit, stated, “I am grateful for Sergeant Yoon’s resourcefulness and sense of responsibility in responding quickly even while off duty. This case once again demonstrates that the riot police unit is dedicated to protecting citizens’ safety anytime and anywhere.”
In response to this incident, the police plan to strengthen patrols and public awareness campaigns to prevent crimes in public spaces such as underground parking lots in apartment complexes. In addition, vehicle owners are advised that “locking your doors and not leaving valuables in your car is the best way to prevent crime,” emphasizing the importance of individual vigilance.
