Yeongsangang Environmental Office to Jointly Inspect 32 Vulnerable Sites for Environmental Pollution
Expansion to Gwangju, Jeju, and Gyeongnam...
Focusing on Civil Complaints and Blind Spots
Promoting Voluntary Improvements through Private Consulting and Loan Support
The Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office announced on May 14 that, together with local governments, it will conduct a joint planned inspection of 32 business sites that discharge environmental pollutants by August.
The inspection targets are business sites that have been the subject of repeated civil complaints or are deemed to have inadequate management. The office will increase the intensity of enforcement through information analysis and cross-inspections.
The joint planned inspections are carried out through information sharing between the environmental office and local governments, and to enhance objectivity and efficiency, public officials from other regions will participate in cross-inspections. Since 2023, the Yeongsangang River Basin Environmental Office has operated a planned inspection team in the Jeonnam region, inspecting 70 business sites over the past two years and uncovering environmental law violations at 40 of them.
This year, the scope of inspections will be expanded to include Gwangju, Jeju, and Gyeongnam. In particular, for small businesses that require further improvements even after inspections, a private environmental monitoring team will be deployed to provide consulting on facilities and operations, and information on loan support programs for replacing outdated facilities will also be provided. This initiative is jointly operated with the Korea Environmental Industry and Technology Institute.
Commissioner Kim Youngwoo stated, "Cooperation among relevant agencies is essential for proactively addressing regional environmental issues," and added, "We will continue to strengthen management and support to ensure a clean and healthy local environment."
