The Chungnam Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services announced on May 13 that its Horticultural Research Institute's independently developed new chrysanthemum variety, "Angel Lupin," was awarded the Prime Minister's Prize at the 2025 Goyang International Flower Fair New Variety Contest, which was held for 16 days until May 11.
This is the second time the Chungnam Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services has received an award at the New Variety Contest, following the "Yesholic" variety, which was independently developed and won the top prize at the 2017 Goyang International Flower Fair.
Angel Lupin is a disbud-type cut chrysanthemum, with a single flower blooming on each stem. It is characterized by its vivid milky-white color, robust petals, and uniformly round flower shape. It also boasts an excellent vase life of more than three weeks.
The panel of judges, consisting of experts from various fields including consumers, producers, florists, seed production companies, and overseas buyers, recognized the excellence of Angel Lupin's technology, which led to its selection for the Prime Minister's Prize, the highest national award.
This year's New Variety Contest at the Goyang International Flower Fair featured 173 varieties submitted by agricultural research institutions and private breeders from across the country.
Lee Younghye, an official at the Horticultural Research Institute of the Chungnam Provincial Agricultural Research and Extension Services, said, "This award once again proves that Chungnam is at the top level nationwide in chrysanthemum breeding. Going forward, we will continue our efforts to diversify distribution channels, such as the online market, by incorporating value-added technologies like dyeing techniques, and to further expand the range of varieties available to farmers."
