On May 2, Gwangju City and the Gwangju Jeonnam Branch of the Korea Confectionery Association signed a business agreement in the city hall business room to promote the "2025 May Gwangju Sharing Sale." The agreement was arranged to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the 5·18 Democratization Movement and to put the spirit of sharing and solidarity of Gwangju into everyday practice. The signing ceremony was attended by Mayor Kang Kijeong, Lee Gwankyo, President of the Gwangju Jeonnam Branch of the Korea Confectionery Association, and about 20 bakery representatives.
According to the agreement, the "May Gwangju Sharing Sale" will be held for two days, from May 17 to 18, at 49 bakeries in Gwangju and the Jeonnam and Jeonbuk regions. During the event, consumers can purchase confectionery products at a 10% discount.
This Sharing Sale features participation from well-known local bakeries such as Gungjeon Bakery, Beviere, and Bread Seven, as well as long-beloved neighborhood bakeries, further adding to the meaning of 5·18 by carrying on the spirit of "sharing" with the local community. The city will support promotional activities for participating businesses to encourage purchases.
Lee Gwankyo, President of the Gwangju Jeonnam Branch of the Korea Confectionery Association, said, "What was once a painful memory of 5·18 in my childhood now seems to have become an occasion to commemorate the pain and share joy together. It is very meaningful that, on the 45th anniversary of 5·18, confectioners from Gwangju and Jeonnam can practice sharing in line with the spirit of May."
Mayor Kang Kijeong stated, "The 45th anniversary of 5·18, which we encounter in the process of establishing a democratic government, is even more special. Gwangju is preparing for people to newly experience the city by walking, riding, eating, and resting through free public transportation, the May Tent Village, the Boy’s Path Tour, and rice balls. Through this Sharing Sale, the Gwangju spirit of sharing and solidarity?which once meant sharing blood and rice balls?will grow even stronger, and for future generations who have not experienced May, it will serve as a lesson from history."
