Personal Information Protection Commission Urges SKT Users Handling Personal Data to Subscribe to USIM Protection Service
"Implementation of Additional Authentication Methods Required"
The Personal Information Protection Commission has urged large-scale personal information processors to implement more thorough safety measures in response to the SK Telecom hacking incident.
On April 30, the Commission stated, "Personal information handlers using SK Telecom must subscribe to the USIM protection service and replace their USIM cards in the future." The Commission also advised, "When performing authentication procedures to verify users, it is necessary to implement an additional authentication method besides mobile phone authentication."
Additionally, the Commission requested that organizations strengthen their detection systems for abnormal access attempts or unusual activities within their systems, and immediately report any suspicious circumstances to the Commission or relevant authorities.

The Commission plans to hold an emergency meeting on May 2 with large-scale personal information processors, including platform operators and telecommunications companies, to discuss additional countermeasures. Ko Haksoo, Chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission, stated, "Please implement enhanced user protection measures to prevent any damage resulting from this incident."
